Faculty paper accepted in the Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning (IJPBL) 2019 Special Issue
Faculty in the Department of Biology at NMSU have recently had a manuscript entitled “Implementing and Evaluation a Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) at a Hispanic-Serving Institution” accepted in the Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning (IJPBL) 2019 Special Issue. Spearheaded by NMSU-HHMI program director, MichèleShuster, different Biology faculty have offered this HHMI-sponsored CURE course over the years, each with a different scientific focus. In all course iterations students have been expected to generate their own hypotheses, which they then experimentally test. Students present their results and conclusions at a poster session at the end of each iteration. The accepted manuscript in IJPBL demonstrates that the NMSU Biology CURE, which has enrolled a high proportion of underrepresented minority students (~65%), promotes scientific self-efficacy, scientific identity and intention to persist in STEM.
